Punjab Launches Canned Chhole, Rajmah at Global Food Exhibition in Paris
Punjab is seeking to strengthen its position in the international processed-food market by showcasing its traditional cuisine and agricultural products at SIAL Paris 2026, with the launch of canned chickpeas in brine, known as Chitte Chhole, and red kidney beans, or Rajmah, under the cooperative brand SOHNA.
Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann inaugurated the exhibition stall of the Punjab State Cooperative Supply and Marketing Federation Limited ( MARKFED) at the India Pavilion on October 18 and unveiled the two products. The launch is part of the state's broader strategy to move beyond conventional agricultural production towards food processing, value addition, modern packaging and export-oriented manufacturing.
The five-day exhibition, being held from October 17 to 21 at Paris Nord Villepinte, brings together international food producers, buyers and distributors. India has been designated Country of Honour at the prestigious biennial event, elevating its food-trade profile. According to India Trade Promotion Organisation chairman Jawed Ashraf, India's unified national pavilion spans approximately 1,900 square metres and features more than 148 exhibitors, showcasing agricultural produce, processed foods, beverages and culinary diversity.
The initiative builds on MARKFED's history dating back to 1954 and its established SOHNA portfolio, which includes Sarson Ka Saag, Dal Makhani, Kadhi Pakora, Rajmah, pickles, wheat flour and basmati rice. Its official export information identifies markets including the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, the United Arab Emirates and Singapore. Historical data reported by The Indian Express showed MARKFED exported 108 containers in 2020-21, compared with 58 in 2017-18.
India's previous SIAL Paris participation in 2024 included an APEDA pavilion of approximately 560 square metres featuring around 50 member exporters. ITPO separately listed a 1,500-square-metre India Pavilion, reflecting different participation arrangements. The 2026 presentation marks a larger, more prominent national showcase. SIAL is held every two years, and verified annual state-participation figures are unavailable.
Punjab is participating alongside Milkfed, which markets products under the Verka brand, and Punjab Agro under the Punjab Mart umbrella. The coordinated showcase aims to connect regional food traditions with international retailers, importers and food-service businesses.
The new products offer potential opportunities among Indian diaspora communities and consumers seeking convenient plant-based ingredients. However, sustained growth will depend on regulatory compliance, competitive pricing, distribution partnerships and repeat export orders. The initiative ultimately seeks to strengthen Punjab's agricultural value chain while introducing its culinary heritage to global markets.
