Punjab CM Mann pushes for stronger anti-drug, anti-gangster measures
Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann on Thursday urged senior police officials to intensify the fight against drugs and organised crime across the state, underlining that these remain top priorities for the government.
Chairing a high-level review meeting with Police Commissioners, Inspector Generals, Deputy Inspector Generals and Senior Superintendents of Police, Mann called for vigorous implementation of the state’s flagship campaigns, ‘Yudh Nashean Virudh’ and ‘Gangsteraan Te Vaar’ , aimed at eliminating drug networks and gang activities at their roots.
The chief minister emphasised that visible results on the ground, better coordination, and strict accountability were essential. He assured that the AAP government is committed to the safety and security of ordinary citizens and would provide full support to the police. “There is no shortage of funds to equip our force with modern technology. Staff strength, vehicle fleet and infrastructure are being upgraded to meet operational needs,” Mann said.
Highlighting long-term prevention, he stressed the importance of creating employment opportunities, improving education , and institutionalising career counselling to prevent youth from being lured into drugs or crime. Mann also called for addressing school dropouts, especially in drug-sensitive areas, and launching large-scale career guidance programmes.
On law and order, the chief minister noted that Punjab was in a better position compared to many other states. He said there was zero patronage for criminals , and the police were no longer misused for registering false cases. Mann also directed a statewide drive to prevent the misuse of arms licences, warning that licences used in criminal activity should be cancelled immediately.
Mann warned that any laxity in the drives would attract accountability, while strong performance would be rewarded. To ensure this, he has instituted a systematic monitoring mechanism , personally overseeing the campaigns’ progress on a daily basis , with senior officers required to report outcomes such as arrests, seizures, and enforcement actions. Officers showing strong performance will be rewarded, while lapses or negligence will attract strict accountability measures, including possible disciplinary action. Mann urged the force to continue the Punjab Police’s strong legacy of proactive action against social evils, making it clear that these campaigns are being actively tracked and evaluated , not left to chance.
Chief Secretary KAP Sinha , DGP Gaurav Yadav , and other senior officials attended the meeting.
