Punjab CM Mann Approves Pilot De-Addiction Programme in Three Border Districts
Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has given in-principle approval for a pilot project aimed at strengthening psychosocial care for people battling drug addiction in the border districts of Amritsar, Tarn Taran and Fazilka.
The decision was taken during a meeting between Mann and a delegation of the Art of Living Foundation, according to an official statement.
Under the initiative, an Art of Living-based spiritual wellness programme will complement existing medical treatment at outpatient opioid-assisted treatment clinics and jails in Gurdaspur and Kapurthala.
Mann said Punjab has expanded access to medication for people affected by drug addiction, but retaining patients in treatment during the initial months remains a major challenge. He stressed that de-addiction should address emotional and psychological needs alongside medical intervention.
The chief minister said the pilot programme would focus on rehabilitation, relapse prevention, community participation and long-term recovery. It will initially be implemented with the support of medical treatment staff, while trained local personnel will gradually take over its operation to ensure sustainability. Mann said the state would continue its anti-drug campaign through medical treatment, counselling, rehabilitation, community support and stringent legal action.
He said the government had already targeted drug trafficking networks by disrupting the supply chain and taking action against traffickers. The next priority, he added, was ensuring timely and effective rehabilitation so that people affected by addiction can return to healthy and dignified lives.
During the meeting, Mann also asked the Art of Living Foundation to undertake a pilot project on groundwater recharge and conservation in Mansa and Sangrur districts.
The initiative will initially focus on developing comprehensive strategies for water conservation before being expanded across Punjab. Mann stressed the need to safeguard declining groundwater levels and ensure long-term water security.
He also directed the foundation to coordinate with various government departments during awareness campaigns to reach farmers, youth, students and other sections of society.
