Pune doctor commits suicide, accuses cops of rape

In a heartbreaking turn of events, a young woman doctor from Phaltan, Satara district, ended her life late Thursday night, leaving behind a note that revealed a horrifying account of sexual assault and sustained mental harassment by the very people sworn to protect her - two local police officers.

The doctor, a native of Beed district, was discovered hanging in a hotel room in Phaltan. Authorities were immediately alerted, but by then, the trauma she had endured had claimed her life. According to officials, the note, written on her palm, named Sub-Inspector Gopal Badane as the perpetrator of repeated sexual assaults and identified Prashant Bankar , another police personnel, as responsible for ongoing mental harassment and intimidation over the past five months.

“This is a tragic and deeply disturbing incident,” said an official from Satara police. “We have registered a case and the body has been sent for post-mortem. The allegations mentioned in the note are being thoroughly investigated.”

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who also oversees the Home Department, intervened immediately. Speaking with the Satara Superintendent of Police, he ordered the immediate suspension of Gopal Badane and Prashant Bankar and stressed that strict action must be taken against all involved. The Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) affirmed that justice would be pursued with urgency.

Maharashtra Women’s Commission Chairperson Rupali Chakankar also responded swiftly, stating, “We have taken cognisance of the matter and directed the Satara Police to act decisively. Teams have been deployed to locate and question the accused. Those responsible for this unfortunate incident will not be spared.”

The incident has sent shockwaves across Maharashtra, raising urgent questions about the safety of women professionals in public institutions and the unchecked abuse of authority by law enforcement officials. Experts note that while the rapid suspension of the accused signals accountability, the case underscores deeper systemic issues: lack of internal oversight, inadequate grievance mechanisms, and societal indifference that allows harassment to fester until tragedy strikes.
