Pune court imposes unique punishment in drunk driving case

In a rare and thought-provoking verdict, a Pune Motor Vehicle Court has imposed an unconventional punishment on a youth caught driving under the influence of alcohol. Instead of merely levying a fine, the court has directed the offender to actively participate in spreading awareness about the dangers of drunk driving.

According to Pimpri–Chinchwad traffic police, the incident occurred on July 22 in Hinjewadi, when the accused was caught driving while intoxicated. Following his arrest, a case was registered under drunk driving laws, and he was subsequently presented before the court.

In its latest ruling, the court, acting under Section 23 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, ordered the man to pay a fine of ₹10,000 and, in addition, print and distribute 1,000 awareness pamphlets at city traffic junctions. These pamphlets are meant to educate motorists about the severe risks and consequences of driving under the influence of alcohol.

Traffic department officials have welcomed the judgment, describing it as a “constructive punishment” that not only penalizes the offender but also promotes social responsibility. “Such innovative measures can serve as an eye-opener for those who continue to drink and drive, endangering lives,” an official said.

Officials emphasized that driving under the influence continues to be a major contributor to road accidents, claiming numerous innocent lives each year. The court’s creative ruling, they said, could help build greater awareness and accountability among motorists.
