Heavy overnight rains battered Puducherry and its surrounding areas, inundating roads, disrupting traffic and affecting daily wage earners, while schools in Puducherry and Karaikal remained closed on Thursday as a precautionary measure.

Minister A Namassivayam announced a holiday for all government-run and privately managed schools in the two regions in view of the heavy downpour.

Puducherry recorded 7 cm of rainfall in the 24 hours ending at 8.30 am on Thursday, according to official sources. The intense showers caused waterlogging in several areas, making commuting difficult and disrupting normal activities.

Authorities have established a control room to handle emergency calls and provide assistance to people affected by the rains. Revenue officials and other government departments are prepared to respond to emergencies and address any exigencies arising from the situation.

The latest spell of rain has also brought renewed attention to the problem of waterlogging in low-lying areas of the Union Territory.

On Wednesday, Pro Tem Speaker A Anbalagan submitted a petition to Chief Minister N Rangasamy, urging the government to take necessary steps to drain accumulated rainwater from low-lying areas.

With roads inundated in several places, authorities are focusing on emergency response and measures to minimise public inconvenience.

Residents have been advised to follow official weather updates as rainfall activity continues across the region.
