Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday presented the President’s Colour to the Puducherry Police, honouring the Union Territory’s uniformed force for its distinguished service, discipline and achievements.

Shah presented the prestigious Nishaan to the force’s Ensign Officer at a ceremony held at the Puducherry Armed Police Ground in neighbouring Gorimedu. He was accompanied by Puducherry Police Director General of Police Shalini Singh.

Lieutenant Governor K Kailashnathan and Chief Minister N Rangasamy were among those present at the event, which marked a moment for the police force.

The President’s Colour is regarded as the highest honour bestowed on a military unit or a state or Union Territory police force. The distinction recognises an organisation’s sustained record of exemplary service, professionalism and commitment to duty.

President Droupadi Murmu had announced the conferment of the honour on Puducherry Police on May 8, citing its “exceptional service, discipline and distinguished achievements.” The recognition places the force among a select group of police organisations and armed services that have received the prestigious honour.

The President’s Colour, also known as Nishaan, is traditionally presented to units that have demonstrated an outstanding record of service over the years. It serves as a symbol of institutional pride, dedication and public duty.

The honour has previously been conferred on the Indian Navy and Indian Coast Guard, as well as several state police departments.

For Puducherry Police, the presentation marks an important recognition of its legacy and service to the Union Territory. The ceremony also underscores the force’s role in maintaining law and order, protecting citizens and meeting the demands of policing in the Union Territory.

The presentation by Amit Shah came as an acknowledgement of the force’s contribution and distinguished record. The event brought together the Union Territory’s political and police leadership to mark the occasion.

The conferment of the President’s Colour is expected to add further distinction to Puducherry Police’s identity and reinforce its commitment to professional policing and public service.
