Puducherry Gets Centre's Approval for ₹14,300 Crore Budget for 2026-27
The Union Home Ministry has approved the Puducherry government's ₹14,300 crore Budget for the financial year 2026-27 , clearing the way for the Union Territory to present its annual financial statement in the Legislative Assembly later this month.
In a communication sent to the Chief Secretary of the Puducherry administration on Monday, the Ministry of Home Affairs said the budget proposal was examined in consultation with the Ministry of Finance before receiving the approval of the President of India . The President has also authorised the laying of the Annual Financial Statement for 2026-27 before the Puducherry Legislative Assembly.
As a Union Territory with a legislature , Puducherry requires the Centre's approval for its annual budget under the constitutional and financial framework governing Union Territories. The Centre's allocation and approval are based on factors such as the Union Territory's estimated revenue receipts, fiscal deficit, grants-in-aid from the Central government, committed expenditure, and funding requirements for welfare schemes, infrastructure projects, and administrative expenses . The Budget also takes into account recommendations of the Finance Ministry and overall fiscal prudence.
The AINRC-Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) coalition government , which assumed office in May following the April 9 Assembly elections , is set to present its first budget of the new term. Chief Minister N. Rangasamy , who also holds the Finance portfolio, is expected to table the Budget during the upcoming Assembly session.
Official sources said the Speaker's election is likely to be held before the commencement of the session. AIADMK legislator A. Anbalagan is currently serving as the pro tem Speaker of the House.
The Assembly session will begin with the customary address by the Lieutenant Governor , followed by the presentation of the Budget, which is expected to outline the government's fiscal priorities and development agenda for the coming financial year.
