PTI lawyer dismisses health rumours about Imran Khan, submits report to Pakistan SC

A court‑ordered report on jailed former prime minister Imran Khan’s living conditions and treatment in Adiala Jail has been submitted to the Pakistan Supreme Court , and a PTI lawyer has denied media claims about Khan’s health following their meeting. Advocate Salman Safdar , appointed amicus curiae by the Supreme Court to independently review Khan’s situation, made the clarification after filing a seven‑page report with the apex court.

Safdar met Khan in his cell at Adiala Jail, Rawalpindi , for about three hours on Tuesday , marking the first visit by anyone since early December. Although some earlier reports suggested Safdar had spoken about Khan’s health, he told reporters he had not issued any statement on the subject and that earlier remarks were misreported . He said he only confirmed the meeting and full access and reiterated that he would not discuss details until after submitting his report to the Supreme Court .

Safdar also clarified that he did not brief Khan’s sister Aleema Khan or PTI officials after the meeting, saying they understood he could not discuss the report’s contents before it was formally filed.

The Supreme Court had appointed Safdar after hearing concerns about Khan’s access to family and legal counsel and after denying an earlier urgent plea by senior PTI lawyer Latif Khosa for an immediate meeting. The court’s two‑member bench, headed by Chief Justice Yahya Afridi and including Justice Shahid Bilal Hasan , directed that Safdar be given full and respectful access inside the jail and that he inspect Khan’s living conditions and available facilities.

During the hearing, Safdar sought clarification on whether his report should also cover health matters. The bench agreed the primary focus should be on living conditions , though it noted there had been some concerns about Khan’s health raised previously, including after a recent medical procedure.

Khan, 73, has been in custody since August 5, 2023 , following his arrest after a corruption conviction . Pakistani news outlets and PTI allies have in recent months highlighted alleged restrictions on his meetings with family, lawyers, and medical professionals, and the party has mounted several legal efforts to restore regular access.

The Supreme Court has adjourned further proceedings until February 12 , when it is expected to review Safdar’s report. Lawyers for Khan and his party have continued to press for wider visitation rights and protections, framing the legal and prison access issues as matters of prisoner rights and due process.
