Protests Spread Across Manipur Hills as Six Naga Men Still Missing After Abduction Wave
Thousands of women staged sit-in protests across Naga-inhabited regions of Manipur on Wednesday, demanding the immediate release of six Naga men still missing after a wave of abductions linked to recent violence in the state’s hill districts.
In the Senapati district headquarters , normal life was severely affected as markets remained shut and transport services were suspended. Protesters raised slogans and held placards demanding justice and the safe return of the abducted men, accusing armed groups of continued kidnappings.
The demonstrations were led by the Naga Women's Union , whose president Priscilla Thiumai urged immediate government intervention and appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to ensure the safe release of the missing men. She also demanded a review of the Suspension of Operations (SoO) agreement , alleging misuse by militant groups.
Similar protests were reported from Ukhrul, Chandel, Tamenglong, and Noney districts , reflecting widespread concern across Naga-inhabited areas of the state.
The crisis began on May 13 after an ambush in Kangpokpi district in which three church leaders were killed, triggering retaliatory abductions across Kangpokpi and Senapati districts . More than 38 people were initially taken hostage by armed groups.
Subsequently, around 31 captives were released in phases, including women, villagers from both communities, and religious personnel. However, six Naga men, including villagers from Konsakhul, remain untraced despite ongoing search efforts.
Security forces, including CRPF units, are conducting combing operations in hill terrain, while surveillance has been intensified in sensitive areas.
Civil society groups have also met the state government demanding urgent intervention. Meanwhile, an economic blockade in parts of the hills has disrupted transport along key routes, adding to tensions.
Despite mediation efforts by local organisations and church bodies, the situation remains unresolved with no confirmed breakthrough in the fate of the missing men.
