Protest Against Pulivarthi Nani Triggers Confrontation
Political tensions escalated in Tirupati on Tuesday after leaders and workers of the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) staged a protest demanding action against Chandragiri MLA Pulivarthi Nani over his alleged remarks.
The protest, led by Chevireddy Mohith Reddy , saw hundreds of party supporters march towards the office of the Tirupati Superintendent of Police to submit a complaint seeking the registration of a case against the legislator. The demonstrators maintained that they were exercising their democratic right to petition the authorities and sought immediate police intervention.
However, the rally was halted before reaching the SP's office as police personnel deployed in large numbers blocked the procession. The move triggered protests from YSRCP leaders, who alleged that they were being prevented from submitting their representation despite conducting a peaceful march.
As tensions mounted, Mohith Reddy staged a sit-in protest at the main entrance of the SP office, accusing the administration of denying the opposition an opportunity to present its grievance. The situation soon turned volatile, with police and protesters engaging in a heated confrontation.
According to YSRCP leaders, the scuffle resulted in several party workers sustaining injuries. The party alleged that police resorted to force while dispersing the gathering, leading to multiple leaders and activists being hurt and subsequently shifted to hospitals for treatment. Police later detained Chevireddy Mohith Reddy , Harshith Reddy , and several other YSRCP leaders before releasing them.
Addressing the media after his release, Mohith Reddy questioned why no action had been initiated against the ruling-party MLA while opposition leaders attempting to lodge a complaint were being detained. He alleged that law enforcement agencies were adopting a selective approach and called for equal application of the law irrespective of political affiliation.
The YSRCP leader further accused the government of attempting to suppress opposition voices and curtail democratic rights. He warned that the party would intensify its agitation across Andhra Pradesh if authorities failed to register a case and take action against Pulivarthi Nani.
The episode adds to the growing political friction in the Tirupati-Chandragiri region , where confrontations between the ruling coalition and the opposition YSRCP have remained frequent since the 2024 Assembly elections. With both sides hardening their positions, Tuesday's protest once again highlighted the increasingly charged political atmosphere in the district.
