India's largest private sector lender HDFC Bank reported a 5% year-on-year rise in standalone net profit to Rs 19,060 crore for the April-June quarter (Q1 FY27), reflecting steady growth supported by stronger lending and a significant improvement in asset quality.

The bank had posted a net profit of Rs 18,155 crore during the corresponding quarter of the previous financial year. While total income declined to Rs 92,184 crore from Rs 99,200 crore a year ago, interest income increased to Rs 79,363 crore , indicating continued strength in its core lending business.

Net interest income (NII) , a key indicator of a bank's earnings from lending activities, rose 7% to Rs 33,530 crore . The bank reported a net interest margin (NIM) of 3.26% on total assets during the quarter.

A major highlight of the results was the improvement in asset quality . Gross non-performing assets (NPAs) declined to 1.17% of gross advances from 1.40% a year earlier, while net NPAs eased to 0.41% from 0.47% . Reflecting the healthier loan portfolio, provisions and contingencies fell sharply to Rs 3,060 crore , compared with Rs 14,442 crore in the same quarter last year.

The bank's operating profit , however, slipped to Rs 28,169 crore from Rs 35,734 crore a year ago. Its c apital adequacy ratio also moderated slightly to 19.57% , though it remained comfortably above regulatory requirements.

Welcoming newly appointed part-time Chairman Rajiv Kumar , Managing Director and CEO Sashidhar Jagdishan said his appointment has brought stability to the institution following the unexpected resignation of former chairman Atanu Chakraborty earlier this year.

Looking ahead, Jagdishan expressed confidence in the business environment, saying the bank is ready to accelerate growth. He also expects healthy inflows under the Foreign Currency Non-Resident (FCNR) deposit scheme before the September 30 deadline.

On the leadership front, Deputy Managing Director Kaizad M Bharucha said the board's Governance, Nomination and Remuneration Committee will take a decision on Jagdishan's reappointment at the appropriate time. His current three-year term is scheduled to end on October 26, 2026 .

On a consolidated basis, HDFC Bank Group reported an 18% increase in profit after tax to Rs 19,245 crore , while consolidated net revenue stood at Rs 85,480 crore during the quarter.
