Probe intensifies after gun attack on Farooq Abdullah, LG assures swift action

The investigation into the gun attack on senior political leader Farooq Abdullah has gathered pace, with authorities in Jammu and Kashmir launching a detailed probe into the motives and background of the accused . Officials say the inquiry is now focusing on the circumstances surrounding the incident as well as the past history of the attacker.

Abdullah, 88 year old National Conference president , had a narrow escape on Wednesday night when a gunman opened fire at him from behind while he was leaving a wedding function in the Greater Kailash area on the outskirts of Jammu. Security personnel present at the venue reacted quickly, preventing the situation from escalating further and ensuring the veteran leader’s safety.

Police moved swiftly and arrested the accused, identified as 63 year old Kamal Singh Jamwal , a resident of Purani Mandi in Jammu. During preliminary questioning, Jamwal reportedly told investigators that he had been waiting for an opportunity to target Abdullah for nearly 20 years , a claim that has now become a key focus of the ongoing investigation.

Following the incident, Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha spoke to Abdullah and assured him that the administration would ensure a thorough and transparent investigation . Sources said the Lieutenant Governor has directed Director General of Police Nalin Prabhat to leave no stone unturned in getting to the bottom of the incident .

Officials said police teams are now examining the antecedents, possible motives, and connections of the accused to determine whether he acted alone or if any other individuals were involved. Investigators are also reviewing security arrangements at the venue and reconstructing the sequence of events that led to the attack.

Authorities have also instructed senior officials to strengthen security for protectees , particularly senior political leaders, as the probe continues to unfold.
