Priyadarshi’s 'Idupu Kayitham' Faces Fresh Controversy Over Telangana Wedding Customs
Priyadarshi’s upcoming romantic drama 'Idupu Kayitham' has landed in another controversy even before its theatrical release, with a song from the film drawing criticism from some Telangana netizens over its portrayal of wedding customs and the serving of liquor at marriage celebrations.
The latest controversy comes months after the film attracted attention over its title, which sparked a debate on social media about Telangana’s language, dialect and regional identity. The latest criticism has once again brought the film into the spotlight, with some viewers questioning whether its portrayal of local traditions could create a misleading impression of the state’s culture.
The makers recently released a song featuring a wedding setting in which liquor is shown being served directly to guests. Some social media users have objected to the depiction, arguing that it does not accurately reflect the wedding customs they are familiar with in Telangana. They believe such scenes could misrepresent local traditions if presented without the appropriate cultural context.
However, the film is yet to reach theatres, and the complete context of the scenes remains to be seen. The criticism surrounding a song does not necessarily reflect the overall narrative or treatment of the subject in the finished film.
Meanwhile, the makers have continued their promotional campaign with the release of 'Gadapa', the film’s second single, following the earlier song 'Srilatha'. The latest track explores the emotions surrounding a bride’s new life after marriage, drawing on the traditions and family relationships associated with Telangana weddings.
Directed by Vamsi Reddy Dondapati, the film is positioned as a family-oriented entertainer with a strong regional backdrop. Priyadarshi plays the lead role, while Naga Durga, known for her work in Telangana folk music, makes her lead-acting debut as the female protagonist.
The film also features Abhinav Gomatam, Shivajyothi, popularly known as Teenmar Savithri, Sujatha, known as Jordar Sujatha, Chandravva, Mounika Reddy, Racha Ravi, Bithiri Sathi, Abhay Bethiganti and Mime Madhu, among others.
Bunny Vas is producing the film under Bunny Vas Works and Sukumar Writings, with Tabitha Sukumar presenting the project. Suresh Bobbili is composing the music.
The production team has also revealed that the film’s outdoor shooting schedule was completed in 31 days, highlighting the pace at which the project was made.
