Press Freedom Is the Backbone of Democracy, Says Seethakka
Telangana Minister Seethakka has emphasised that press freedom is essential for a strong democracy, warning that viewing women journalists who question those in power as enemies poses a serious threat to democratic values. She said protecting women journalists’ safety, professional rights and freedom of expression was a collective responsibility.
Seethakka made these remarks while inaugurating a national conference of women journalists organised by the Indian Journalists Union (IJU) at Tourism Plaza in Begumpet, Hyderabad.
Addressing the gathering, the minister said questioning those in authority was a fundamental part of democracy. Instead of suppressing questions, political leaders should demonstrate the courage to respond to criticism and explain their decisions, she said.
“The strength of democracy lies in its ability to tolerate criticism,” Seethakka said, stressing that a free media was indispensable for ensuring accountability and protecting democratic institutions.
The minister expressed concern over reports of attacks and harassment against women journalists covering protests demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. She said the challenges faced by women journalists while performing their professional duties must be taken seriously and called for appropriate measures to ensure their safety and prevent any infringement on their freedom.
Criticising the BJP and RSS, Seethakka alleged that attacks on women’s freedom and security had increased under their rule. She called for rejecting the ideology of Manusmriti and giving primacy to the constitutional principles advocated by Dr BR Ambedkar.
Emphasising the importance of liberty, equality and freedom of expression, she said these values must guide society and public life. She also stressed that women should be able to work without fear, discrimination or intimidation.
The minister said the Telangana government aimed to empower women and develop them as leaders across all sectors. Ensuring a safe and supportive environment for women journalists, she added, was crucial to strengthening democratic values and enabling the media to perform its watchdog role without fear or interference.
