President Murmu to visit West Bengal today: Culture and empowerment in focus

President Droupadi Murmu is set to visit West Bengal today , kicking off her two-day tour of the state with engagements that highlight culture, heritage, and women’s empowerment.

Upon arrival, the President will participate in preparatory and official visits in Darjeeling , setting the stage for the main events scheduled for Saturday, March 7 . The visit underscores her commitment to celebrating India’s rich cultural heritage while promoting social initiatives.

During her stay, President Murmu is expected to inaugurate the Darjeeling Hill Festival , commemorating the 150th anniversary of Vande Mataram . This festival aims to showcase the vibrant tribal and hill cultures of the region, bringing together artists, performers, and communities in a celebration of tradition and identity.

She will also launch the ‘Root & Rhythms’ exhibition at Lok Bhavan , featuring indigenous art forms and cultural artefacts that highlight the diverse artistic legacy of Darjeeling and its surrounding areas.

Adding a modern, empowerment-focused dimension to the visit, the President will virtually inaugurate the Platinum Jubilee Flagship Programme on Women’s Leadership and Empowerment at IIT Kharagpur . The programme is designed to strengthen women’s participation in leadership roles across education, business, and governance sectors.

Tomorrow, she will grace the 9th International Santal Conference , organised by the International Santal Council , engaging with tribal leaders and delegates to promote cultural dialogue, heritage preservation, and community development.

President Murmu’s visit to West Bengal reflects a careful balance of cultural reverence and contemporary social priorities , celebrating the state’s heritage while championing empowerment and inclusion against the scenic backdrop of the Darjeeling hills.
