President Droupadi Murmu on Wednesday paid floral tributes to former President R. Venkataraman on his birth anniversary at Lok Bhavan, honouring his decades-long public service and contributions to India’s development.

R. Venkataraman, the 8th President of India , served from 1987 to 1992, during a period of political turbulence that saw multiple changes in the office of the Prime Minister and significant national challenges. Born on December 4, 1910, in Rajamadam village, Tamil Nadu, he actively participated in the freedom struggle, was imprisoned during the Quit India Movement, and was awarded the prestigious Tamra Patra in recognition of his sacrifices. He also served as a member of the Constituent Assembly, contributing to the framing of India’s Constitution.

Before his presidency, Venkataraman held key positions including Vice President, Finance Minister, Defence Minister, and Home Minister, shaping policies related to the economy, industrial development, and national defence. As Defence Minister, he laid the groundwork for India’s missile programme, appointing A. P. J. Abdul Kalam to lead it, and his tenure helped strengthen parliamentary democracy during complex political times.

Apart from the President’s tribute, several leaders remembered him on social media. Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D. K. Shivakumar paid homage, writing, “My humble tribute to former President R. Venkataraman on his birth anniversary. His journey from the freedom struggle to the highest office of the nation reflects rare dedication and integrity.”

Venkataraman was known for his integrity, restraint, and deep understanding of constitutional processes. His presidency is often compared with those of Rajendra Prasad and A. P. J. Abdul Kalam, distinguished by his pragmatic, “copybook” approach to the office, acting prudently during political crises rather than taking symbolic or activist roles. His long career spanned the freedom struggle, constitution-making, ministerial roles, and ultimately the highest constitutional office, making him a guiding example of dedication, discipline, and service to the nation.

During his tenure as President from 1987 to 1992, R. Venkataraman gave assent to several important constitutional amendments and bills that shaped India’s democratic framework. Notably, he signed the 61st Amendment, which lowered the voting age from 21 to 18, and the 62nd Amendment, which extended reservation of seats for Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, and Anglo-Indians. He also exercised his constitutional discretion by withholding assent on a bill that sought to raise Members of Parliament’s salaries and allowances, reflecting his careful and principled approach to the office.
