President Murmu embarks on historic state visit to Angola and Botswana

President Droupadi Murmu on Saturday began a six-day state visit to Angola and Botswana, marking the first-ever visit by an Indian head of state to these African nations. The trip highlights India’s strategic push to strengthen ties with Africa and diversify its partnerships in energy, trade, and technology.

In the first leg of her journey, President Murmu will be in Angola’s capital, Luanda, from November 8 to 11, for high-level discussions. The visit follows Angola’s own state visit to India earlier this year in May, when President João Lourenço engaged with Indian leaders to enhance cooperation in energy, defense, agriculture, and digital infrastructure. India and Angola have long-standing relations centered on energy and trade. Angola is Africa’s second-largest oil producer, with proven reserves of around 9-10 billion barrels and daily production of over 1.2 million barrels. Oil accounts for nearly 90% of Angola’s export revenue, making it a key partner for India’s energy security. Both countries also collaborate on defense, healthcare, renewable energy, space, and multilateral initiatives such as the International Solar Alliance.

The second leg of President Murmu’s visit will be to Botswana, where India and Botswana enjoy cordial relations focused on trade, education, technology, and development cooperation. Botswana benefits from Indian expertise in IT, renewable energy, healthcare, and capacity-building programs.

This visit is strategically important for India as it seeks to expand its footprint in Africa, secure energy and mineral resources, boost trade, and strengthen people-to-people ties. It also reinforces India’s presence amid growing influence from China, the US, and Russia, who are active partners with both Angola and Botswana in various sectors.
