The Hon’ble President of India will interact with around 200 tribal scholarship beneficiaries as part of a special programme organised by the Ministry of Tribal Affairs during the nationwide celebrations of “Janjatiya Garima Utsav” . The initiative is being held under “Birsa Lives in New Bharat Week” , reflecting the enduring legacy of Birsa Munda , whose life continues to shape the discourse on tribal rights, identity and empowerment in modern India.

The legacy of Birsa Munda is rooted in his leadership of the “Ulgulan” (Great Rebellion) against colonial exploitation, forced displacement, and the erosion of tribal traditions. His struggle was not limited to resistance alone but strongly centred on land rights, dignity, and cultural survival , themes that remain deeply relevant today. Over time, his vision of justice has evolved into a broader national framework focused on inclusion and equity .

In contemporary India, his influence is reflected in the strengthening of constitutional safeguards for Scheduled Tribes , including provisions under the Fifth and Sixth Schedules , along with laws such as the Forest Rights Act . These measures aim to protect land, governance systems, and cultural identity, continuing the spirit of justice and protection that Birsa Munda symbolised.

His legacy is also visible in efforts to promote tribal identity and cultural pride , through initiatives like Janjatiya Gaurav Divas and “Birsa Lives in New Bharat Week” , which bring tribal history into the national mainstream. These observances help reinforce recognition and belonging within India’s development journey.

At the same time, his ideals are reflected in educational and socio-economic empowerment programmes , including scholarships, fellowships, and overseas study opportunities for Scheduled Tribe students. These initiatives support access to higher education, research, and global exposure, extending Birsa Munda’s vision of self-reliance into the present.

According to officials, the interaction aims to encourage academic excellence, leadership and innovation among tribal youth, while reaffirming the Government’s commitment to inclusive growth and opportunities for historically marginalized communities.

The event forms part of the broader outreach under Janjatiya Garima Utsav , which celebrates the heritage, contributions, and aspirations of tribal communities across India, ensuring that Birsa Munda’s legacy continues to inspire the nation’s path towards a more inclusive future.
