President Accepts Ravneet Singh Bittu's Resignation from Union Cabinet

President Droupadi Murmu has accepted the resignation of Ravneet Singh Bittu from the Union Council of Ministers with immediate effect, following the advice of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The official notification issued by Rashtrapati Bhavan said the resignation was accepted under Article 75(2) of the Constitution, but did not specify any reason. The development comes amid political speculation over the BJP's organisational strategy in Punjab, although the government has made no official statement linking the move to a Cabinet reshuffle.

Bittu was serving as Minister of State for Railways under Ashwini Vaishnaw and Minister of State for Food Processing Industries under Chirag Paswan. During his tenure, he represented the Railways Ministry in infrastructure reviews, station redevelopment projects, passenger amenity initiatives and railway safety programmes, particularly in Punjab and northern India. In the Food Processing Ministry, he promoted investments in agro-processing, value addition for farm produce and flagship schemes such as the PM Kisan Sampada Yojana and Mega Food Parks to strengthen the food processing sector.

A prominent Sikh leader, Bittu is the grandson of former Punjab Chief Minister Beant Singh. A three-time Lok Sabha MP, he began his political career with the Congress, representing Anandpur Sahib and later Ludhiana, before briefly serving as the party's leader in the Lok Sabha. He joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ahead of the 2024 General Election, contested from Ludhiana and, after his defeat, entered the Rajya Sabha from Rajasthan before becoming a Union minister.

Although the Centre has not disclosed the reason for his resignation, reports suggest it follows the completion of his Rajya Sabha tenure from Rajasthan after he was not re-nominated. Political observers believe the move could pave the way for a larger role for Bittu in Punjab ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections, though no official announcement has been made. There is also no official evidence linking his resignation to the recent exit of former Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, despite the two developments occurring within a short span.
