Prashna Raavan’s UAPA Arrest Draws Widespread Condemnation

The arrest of YouTuber Bachalakuri Joseph , popularly known as “Prashna Raavan,” under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) has escalated into a major political and legal controversy in Andhra Pradesh, drawing attention to the growing debate over the use of stringent national security laws against social media commentators and government critics.

Joseph was arrested by Gannavaram Police on July 4 near the Vempadu toll plaza in Nakkapalli with assistance from Anakapalli police. He was produced before a court and remanded to 14 days of judicial custody until July 18 before being shifted to Nellore Central Jail .

According to police, the case stems from a video allegedly uploaded by Joseph on November 25, 2025 . Investigators claim the video was "highly provocative" and contained content supportive of the banned CPI (Maoist) organization. Authorities allege that the video featured photographs of slain Maoist leaders, including Hidma and Nambala Keshava Rao , and projected them in a manner that could encourage public sympathy for extremist ideology.

Police further contend that the content had the potential to influence young viewers and promote narratives that are prejudicial to the sovereignty, unity and integrity of India . Based on these allegations, Joseph has been booked under Sections 13 and 39 of the UAPA , in addition to several provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) relating to unlawful activities, public disorder and offences against the state.

The latest case marks Joseph's fifth arrest within a week . His legal troubles intensified following a speech delivered at a Dalit Christian gathering in Eluru , where he accused the state government of failing to curb atrocities against Dalits and sharply criticized Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan and religious preacher Radha Manohar Das over remarks concerning minority communities. While Joseph secured bail in earlier cases, fresh cases were subsequently registered, culminating in the invocation of UAPA.

The use of UAPA has attracted widespread attention because the law contains stringent bail provisions and is generally reserved for cases involving terrorism, extremism and national security. Legal experts note that once UAPA provisions are invoked, obtaining bail becomes significantly more difficult than under ordinary criminal statutes.

The arrest has also triggered sharp political reactions. The Human Rights Forum (HRF) criticized the decision to invoke UAPA, alleging that harsh legal provisions are increasingly being used against critics, content creators and social media commentators. The opposition YSR Congress Party and actor Prakash Raj have also questioned the repeated arrests and called for due process.

Leaders of the ruling alliance, however, have defended the police action, arguing that the case is not about political criticism but about the alleged promotion of a banned organization. As Joseph remains in judicial custody, the case is emerging as a significant test of how courts balance national security concerns , freedom of expression and the expanding influence of digital political commentary in contemporary India.
