‘PRASAD’ scheme in Telangana: ₹146.50 crore for spiritual tourism development
Under the Centre’s ‘PRASAD’ scheme aimed at transforming the landscape of spiritual heritage sites , Telangana has received substantial funding. The Union Ministry of Tourism has approved four projects worth ₹146.50 crore so far for improving tourism infrastructure in the state, Union Minister for Tourism and Culture Gajendra Singh Shekhawat said.
Replying in writing to a question in the Rajya Sabha on Thursday, the minister said the projects were sanctioned under the Central government’s Pilgrimage Rejuvenation and Spiritual Heritage Augmentation Drive (PRASAD) scheme.
The primary objective of the scheme is to enhance the overall experience of tourists at pilgrimage centres and historical sites . The funds are being utilised to develop transport, accommodation and other basic infrastructure facilities for pilgrims. The scheme also focuses on the conservation of spiritual sites and promotion of heritage assets. Officials believe that this will not only boost tourism in the state but also generate local employment opportunities.
The Centre said works are currently underway at several prominent locations, including Bhadrachalam (Sri Sita Ramachandra Swamy temple) , the Ramappa temple in Mulugu district (a UNESCO World Heritage site) , Jogulamba Gadwal (a Shakti Peetha) , and Balkampet Sri Renuka Yellamma temple .
Given Telangana’s distinct identity in spiritual tourism , the Union Ministry of Tourism noted that the implementation of these projects would significantly improve facilities for pilgrims and contribute to an increase in tourism revenue for the state.
