Indian Grandmaster R Praggnanandhaa has secured his place in the 2026 Grand Chess Tour (GCT) Finals, guaranteeing a top-four finish in the overall Tour standings with one round still remaining in the Sinquefield Cup.

Praggnanandhaa's qualification is based on his accumulated GCT Tour Points across the regular-season events. The 2026 GCT features five regular stops, with the Sinquefield Cup serving as the final opportunity to earn points before the season-ending Finals.

The Indian star currently has 24.5 GCT points, placing him second behind Fabiano Caruana, who leads with 25 points. Wesley So is third with 23.5 points, while Vincent Keymer occupies fourth place.

There was no fixed points cutoff for qualification. Instead, players had to finish among the top four in the overall GCT standings after the regular season. Praggnanandhaa's points total has now mathematically guaranteed him one of those four places.

A major boost to his campaign came from his victory at the Saint Louis Rapid & Blitz on August 7. Praggnanandhaa won the event outright, earning 13 GCT points and moving into second place in the overall standings.

He is also still competing for the Sinquefield Cup title. After eight rounds, Praggnanandhaa was tied with Wesley So on five points, with one round remaining. A strong finish could help him overtake Caruana and finish the regular season at the top of the GCT standings.

The GCT Finals will be held from August 21 to 28 at the Saint Louis Chess Club. The top four players will compete in a knockout format for the Tour title.

Magnus Carlsen, despite being one of the world's leading players, is not part of the 2026 full-tour qualification race. His absence is not because of his playing strength or an elimination; he was not a full-tour participant accumulating regular-season GCT points.

If players are tied for fourth in the final standings, a qualifying playoff on August 20 will determine the final entrant.
