Praggnanandhaa Back at the Top, Sindarov Stays in Hunt
Indian Grandmaster R Praggnanandhaa has joined Wesley So at the top of the 2026 Sinquefield Cup standings, while Uzbekistan’s Javokhir Sindarov has kept his title hopes alive with a second consecutive victory in Round 8.
Praggnanandhaa moved to 5 points from eight rounds after defeating Maxime Vachier-Lagrave with the black pieces. The Indian grandmaster produced a strong performance to secure victory in just 27 moves, bringing him level with Wesley So at the summit.
Wesley So, who had entered the round as the sole leader, was held to a draw by Sam Sevian. The half-point allowed Praggnanandhaa to catch him at the top, setting up a tense final round with the championship still wide open.
Praggnanandhaa's latest victory has come at a crucial stage of the tournament. After a combination of wins and draws through the earlier rounds, the Indian star now finds himself in a strong position to challenge for the Sinquefield Cup title.
While Praggnanandhaa moved into the joint lead, Javokhir Sindarov mounted an impressive late charge. The Uzbek grandmaster defeated Vincent Keymer in Round 7 for his first victory of the event before following it up with another full point against Jorden van Foreest in Round 8.
Those back-to-back wins have lifted Sindarov to 4.5 points, just half a point behind Praggnanandhaa and Wesley So. His resurgence means he remains a genuine contender rather than merely fighting for a podium finish.
Sindarov now faces Wesley So in the final round being played today, August 19. A victory would take Sindarov to 5.5 points and could put him in a position to win the tournament, depending on the results of the other leading players.
Vincent Keymer is also on 4.5 points after defeating Fabiano Caruana in Round 8, ensuring that the title race remains tightly packed. The standings leave Wesley So and Praggnanandhaa on five points, with Sindarov and Keymer only half a point behind.
The ninth and final round is being played today, bringing the nine-round classical tournament to its decisive stage. With only half a point separating the leaders from the chasing pair, every result could dramatically reshape the final standings.
For Praggnanandhaa, the task is to protect his joint lead and push for the championship. Wesley So will be looking to regain sole control of the standings, while Sindarov has the opportunity to complete a remarkable late comeback by winning his third straight game.
The Sinquefield Cup has therefore reached a thrilling climax, with Praggnanandhaa and Wesley So leading the way and Sindarov and Keymer still firmly in contention as the final round unfolds today.
