Post-Poll Calculations Begin as TVK Falls Short of Majority in TN
Actor-turned-politician Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) has emerged as the single largest party in the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, winning 108 seats but falling short of the 118-seat majority in the 234-member House, setting off intense political discussions on government formation.
The DMK won 59 seats and the AIADMK secured 47 , leaving no party with a clear mandate. TVK leaders have since begun internal consultations on strategy and leadership decisions.
At the TVK headquarters in Chennai, Vijay paid tribute to ideological figures including Periyar E V Ramasamy, B R Ambedkar, K Kamaraj, Velu Nachiyar and Anjalai Ammal before chairing a meeting of newly elected MLAs. The discussions focused on selecting the legislature party leader, Assembly strategy and possible steps towards forming a government. MLAs also submitted their victory certificates to the party leadership.
Party leader Nanjil Sampath expressed optimism that a solution to the majority gap would emerge, hinting at ongoing efforts to secure support.
Political reactions followed swiftly. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi congratulated Vijay, saying the result reflected the “rising voice of youth” in the state. BJP leader K Annamalai described the outcome as a “generational shift,” praising voters for rejecting traditional political patterns.
Meanwhile, DMK leader T K S Elangovan said TVK cannot form a government with Congress support alone and suggested that without additional backing, Tamil Nadu could face a hung Assembly or fresh elections .
With no party crossing the majority mark, talks among political stakeholders are expected to intensify in the coming days as TVK explores possible alliances to form the government.
