Ponnam Prabhakar Accuses DCM Pawan Kalyan of Advancing BJP Agenda in Telangana
A political controversy has erupted ahead of Telangana Formation Day celebrations after Telangana Transport and BC Welfare Minister Ponnam Prabhakar strongly objected to the proposed "Nava Nirman Sabha" to be addressed by Jana Sena Party chief and Andhra Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan in Hyderabad. The minister demanded that Pawan first offer a public apology to the people of Telangana for his past remarks and opposition to the state's formation before holding any public meeting in the state.
Addressing the media on Monday, Ponnam questioned the timing of the event, noting that Telangana citizens were preparing to celebrate the state's formation anniversary, a day that carries immense emotional and historical significance. He argued that conducting a political gathering on such an occasion raises questions about the intent behind the programme.
The minister accused Pawan Kalyan of previously taking positions that were viewed as hostile to the Telangana statehood movement and said leaders who had opposed the creation of the state should first acknowledge the sentiments of Telangana society. According to him, the state's formation was achieved through years of struggle, sacrifices and public mobilization, making it a matter of pride for millions of people.
Ponnam also launched a sharp attack on the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) , alleging that Pawan Kalyan was acting in line with the party's political agenda in Telangana. He claimed that attempts were being made to create regional divisions and generate political tensions in the state through such programmes. The minister challenged Pawan to clarify the purpose of the meeting and reject allegations that it was intended to serve broader political interests.
Questioning the focus of the Jana Sena leader, Ponnam said Pawan Kalyan should concentrate on governance and development in Andhra Pradesh, where he currently serves as Deputy Chief Minister. He asked why similar "Nava Nirman" initiatives were not being organised in other states and alleged that Telangana was being singled out for political reasons.
Recalling his own involvement in the Telangana movement, the minister said the state was built on the sacrifices of countless activists and martyrs. He stressed that Telangana would continue to maintain friendly relations with neighbouring Andhra Pradesh while firmly safeguarding its identity, self-respect and hard-earned statehood legacy .
Ponnam concluded by reiterating his demand that Pawan Kalyan publicly apologise to the people of Telangana before proceeding with any political programme in the state, warning that any attempt to undermine Telangana's aspirations would be strongly opposed.
