Political Churn, Tragedy and Controversy Mark Tamil Nadu’s 2025

Tamil Nadu’s political landscape in 2025 was marked by shifting alliance equations, the entry of new political players, major controversies and social challenges, all of which reshaped political strategies ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections.

A key development during the year was the revival of the AIADMK–BJP alliance , aimed at mounting a unified challenge to the ruling DMK-led front , which has remained electorally dominant since 2019. The renewed partnership was formally announced in April following a visit by Union Home Minister Amit Shah to Chennai. Soon after, the BJP replaced its state president K Annamalai with Nainar Nagenthran , a move seen as an effort to improve coordination with the AIADMK.

The political discourse was further altered by actor Vijay’s entry into active politics through his party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) . Vijay’s sharp criticism of both the DMK and BJP forced established parties to reassess their electoral strategies, amid speculation that he could emerge as a significant factor in the 2026 polls. However, his political momentum suffered a major setback after a stampede during a rally he addressed in Karur on September 27 , which claimed 41 lives . The incident drew national attention and is being probed by the CBI .

Another controversy with wider implications erupted in December after a Madras High Court order permitted the lighting of the Karthigai Deepam lamp atop Thirupparankundram hill . Local authorities had opposed the ritual, citing concerns over communal harmony due to a nearby dargah. Taking exception to certain observations in the order, the DMK and its allies initiated steps to move an impeachment motion against Justice G R Swaminathan , triggering a broader debate on judicial propriety and accountability.

The DMK, led by Chief Minister M K Stalin , appeared politically confident, projecting stability and setting a target of winning 200 of the 234 Assembly seats in elections expected in April 2026. At the same time, the party faced challenges with V Senthil Balaji losing his ministerial post in a money laundering case and K Ponmudi being dropped following controversial remarks.

Opposition politics remained fluid, with the DMDK undecided on alliance choices , AIADMK veteran K A Sengottaiyan joining TVK , and speculation over future alignments involving expelled leaders O Panneerselvam and T T V Dhinakaran . The PMK’s internal power tussle also threatened to spill into the election year.

Beyond politics, concerns over rising crimes against women and children , 483 murders , dog bite incidents, and a temporary vacancy in the DGP (Law and Order) post kept governance issues in focus. Welfare initiatives and improved water availability following Cyclone Ditwah offered some relief.

As Tamil Nadu enters an election year, developments in 2025 have set the stage for an intensely competitive political battle in 2026.
