Police forms SIT to probe senior IPS officer Y Puran Kumar's suicide case

Haryana Police have established a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the suicide of senior IPS officer Y Puran Kumar, who was found dead at his Chandigarh residence on October 7, 2025. The 52-year-old officer, a 2001-batch IPS officer, reportedly took his own life in the basement of his home.

In a suicide note discovered at the scene, Puran Kumar accused 12 serving and former officers, including Haryana's Director General of Police (DGP) Shatrujeet Singh Kapur and Rohtak Superintendent of Police Narendra Bijarniya, of caste-based discrimination, administrative bias, and harassment. He alleged that these officials had subjected him to mental harassment and obstructed his career progression.

The note also mentioned a recent bribery case involving his aide, which had been a source of significant stress for Kumar. His widow, senior IAS officer Amneet P Kumar, has filed a formal complaint against the accused officers, seeking their arrest and the inclusion of their names in the FIR.

The SIT's investigation aims to thoroughly examine the circumstances surrounding Puran Kumar's death and the allegations of misconduct within the police department. The case has drawn attention to issues of caste discrimination and administrative bias within law enforcement agencies.

As the investigation progresses, authorities are under pressure to ensure a transparent and impartial inquiry to address the serious allegations raised by the late officer's family.
