Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and chief ministers across India paid tribute to police personnel who lost their lives in the line of duty on Wednesday, marking Police Commemoration Day.

Modi expressed gratitude to police personnel for their commitment under challenging circumstances. He highlighted their contribution to maintaining law and order, fighting crime, responding to emergencies and protecting citizens. He said their courage, dedication and supreme sacrifice would remain etched in the nation's memory.

At the National Police Memorial in New Delhi, Shah paid homage to police martyrs and acknowledged the sacrifices of personnel protecting the country's internal security and borders. He also flagged off a motorcycle rally themed “Fight Against Drugs”, involving around 90 police riders from states, Union Territories and central forces. The rally is scheduled to reach Ekta Nagar in Gujarat for the Ekta Parade on October 31.

In Tamil Nadu, Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay paid floral tribute to fallen personnel at the Police Memorial on the Tamil Nadu Police Headquarters campus in Chennai. He handed over insurance sanction orders worth ₹5.96 crore to the families of seven police personnel under the state's Salary Package Scheme. The assistance covers six personnel who died in the line of duty and one officer who is in a coma.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma also paid tribute to fallen police personnel. Sarma recalled the sacrifices of Assam Police, including six personnel who had lost their lives during the preceding year.

Police Commemoration Day is observed every year on October 21 in memory of 10 Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel killed in an ambush by Chinese troops at Hot Springs in Ladakh in 1959.

The observance honours police personnel nationwide who have made the ultimate sacrifice while serving the country and protecting its citizens.
