Poland downs Russian drones in first NATO airspace breach

Poland confirmed on Wednesday (Sept 10) that its military shot down several Russian drones which violated its airspace during a massive overnight assault on Ukraine, marking the first such defensive action and raising fears of wider escalation for NATO. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said “a huge number” of drones crossed into Polish skies before being intercepted. “This is an act of aggression that posed a real threat to our citizens,” Poland’s Operation Command declared in a statement.

The incident comes amid Russia’s largest barrage in months—Ukraine reported over 415 drones and more than 40 missiles striking 15 regions, killing one person and injuring at least three. Among them were Russian-Iranian “Shahed” drones, eight of which entered Poland. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy warned Europe that this was “not an accident” but “an extremely dangerous precedent for Europe,” demanding stronger sanctions and more air defence support from NATO and the U.S.

The Ukrainian Foreign Minister echoed the call, urging NATO states to allow their air defence systems to intercept threats inside Ukraine’s borders before they reach Europe. “Putin escalates because he is not punished. A weak response will only embolden him,” he said. Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda also cautioned that the drone swarm demonstrated Russia’s willingness to expand aggression beyond Ukraine.

The unprecedented breach of NATO airspace now places added pressure on allies to toughen sanctions, accelerate weapons deliveries, and consider new air defence cooperation to prevent further Russian provocations.
