Prime Minister Narendra Modi's proposed visit to Canada on December 11 and 12, 2026, is expected to mark a crucial phase in efforts to rebuild bilateral relations after years of diplomatic tensions. With both countries renewing high-level engagements, accelerating trade negotiations and exploring cooperation in energy, critical minerals, technology and security, the visit carries considerable political, economic and strategic significance.

Preparations have gathered momentum following External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar's October 30 meeting with Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand in Atlanta. Both leaders agreed that Modi's visit would serve as another building block in the renewed relationship. The proposed itinerary includes Toronto and Ottawa, following discussions between Modi and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney.

A major priority will be advancing negotiations for the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA), launched during Carney's March 2026 visit to India. Both countries aim to conclude the agreement by year-end and increase bilateral trade in goods and services to CAD 70 billion by 2030, from approximately CAD 30.4 billion in 2025. India's May trade delegation, led by Piyush Goyal, and Canada's October mission involving nearly 300 delegates have reinforced commercial engagement.

Energy security and critical minerals will also feature prominently. The CAD 2.6-billion uranium supply agreement between Canadian firm Cameco and India's Department of Atomic Energy offers long-term support for India's nuclear programme. Cooperation in lithium, nickel, cobalt, LNG and renewable energy could further strengthen strategic supply chains.

Security remains a sensitive issue following the 2023 killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar and subsequent diplomatic confrontation under former prime minister Justin Trudeau. Both governments are seeking stronger counterterrorism cooperation, a Defence Dialogue and improved information-sharing mechanisms while addressing concerns over extremist activities.

Technology, artificial intelligence, education, professional mobility and Indo-Pacific security are other potential areas of engagement. Canada's Indian-origin community, numbering over 1.8 million, also provides an important social and economic link.

The visit could transform diplomatic reconciliation into a durable strategic partnership. However, progress will depend on implementing agreements, advancing CEPA and rebuilding mutual trust. Sustained security cooperation will remain essential to preventing future disagreements from derailing bilateral progress.
