Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday used Gen Z-friendly slang and popular culture references while addressing the centenary celebrations of Delhi University's Shri Ram College of Commerce (SRCC), returning to the institution 13 years after his widely discussed speech there.

Speaking about SRCC's alumni and their achievements, Modi described them as the college's “OGs”, using the popular slang term for someone considered authentic, exceptional or highly accomplished. He also referred to the Hindi film Dhurandhar, using the term in its conventional sense of a stalwart.

“SRCC's alumni have been very special... they took the glory of the college to the global level. If I put it in your language, the alumni here are the OGs,” Modi said.

He added, “Dhurandhar na ho lekin dhoom machai hai,” highlighting the impact and achievements of the institution's alumni.

Modi also told students that being associated with SRCC itself carries considerable prestige. “Even today in DU, saying you are from SRCC is a flex in itself,” he said, using “flex” in the sense of proudly displaying an achievement or status.

The prime minister traced SRCC's journey from its modest beginnings in Daryaganj to its present position as one of the country's prominent educational institutions. He said the college had shaped generations of students and created a strong sense of pride among its alumni.

Modi's use of contemporary youth language comes amid efforts by the BJP and its leaders to engage younger audiences. BJP MPs have recently used terms such as “FOMO” and “delulu” in Parliament, while Modi has increasingly adopted social media-style formats in youth-focused communication.

Recalling his 2013 visit to SRCC as Gujarat chief minister, Modi said his speech had “become a wave” and continued to have an impact years later.

He contrasted India's situation in 2013, marked by concerns over inflation, corruption, terrorism and weak growth, with the country's position today. Recalling his optimism at the time, Modi said he had described the glass as “fully filled”, with half water and half air, even when the country was struggling with a lack of hope.
