PM Modi Unveils ₹47,600-Crore Package, Positions Odisha as Growth Hub
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday positioned Odisha at the centre of India's eastern growth story, asserting that a region once left behind is now emerging as a gateway to development, investment and national progress. Addressing a public meeting in Mayurbhanj district , Modi unveiled and laid the foundation for projects worth more than ₹47,600 crore , spanning infrastructure, railways, roads, energy, irrigation and welfare sectors.
The Prime Minister said eastern India remained underdeveloped during decades of Congress rule but is now witnessing unprecedented attention through the Centre's "Purvodaya" vision , which seeks to transform eastern states into key drivers of India's economic growth. He noted that Odisha was moving rapidly on the path of development, with welfare programmes and infrastructure projects improving the lives of millions.
Highlighting the state's growing economic potential, Modi said Odisha has so far attracted investment proposals worth nearly ₹20 lakh crore . He added that the BJP government was converting the state's rich natural resources into opportunities for industrial growth, employment generation and prosperity.
The event held special significance as it coincided with the second anniversary of the BJP government in Odisha and took place in Rairangpur , the hometown of President Droupadi Murmu . Extending birthday wishes to the President, Modi said she had strengthened Odisha's identity across the country and inspired millions through her journey from a tribal region to the nation's highest constitutional office.
Earlier in the day, Modi and Murmu visited Pahadpur village , offering prayers at tribal sacred sites and interacting with local institutions. The visit underscored the Centre's focus on tribal welfare and empowerment , particularly in Mayurbhanj, one of Odisha's largest tribal-dominated districts.
The Prime Minister's remarks come against the backdrop of a decade-long increase in central investment in Odisha. Railway funding to the state has risen dramatically, with Odisha receiving a record allocation of over ₹10,900 crore in the 2026-27 Union Budget. Railway projects worth more than ₹90,000 crore are currently under implementation, while extensive investments have also been made in highways, drinking water, housing and industrial infrastructure.
Observers note that Odisha's growing economic significance aligns with the broader rise of eastern India in national policymaking. With major investments flowing into mining, manufacturing, logistics and green energy, the state is increasingly being viewed as a crucial pillar of India's development ambitions.
As Odisha attracts fresh investments and executes large-scale infrastructure projects, the Centre is projecting the state as a key beneficiary of the country's next phase of economic expansion and a cornerstone of eastern India's transformation.
