Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated Phase 2B of the Mumbai Metro Line‑3 (Aqua Line) on October 8, 2025, officially launching the final 10.99-kilometre stretch between Acharya Atre Chowk in Worli and Cuffe Parade. This marks the completion of the 33.5-kilometre fully underground corridor, connecting the northern and southern parts of the city.

Phase 2B introduces 11 new underground stations: Science Museum, Mahalaxmi, Mumbai Central, Grant Road, Girgaon, Kalbadevi, Hutatma Chowk, Churchgate, Vidhan Bhavan, and Cuffe Parade. This stretch completes the city’s first fully underground metro line, enhancing connectivity across key commercial, administrative, and heritage areas of South Mumbai.

The project is implemented by the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MMRCL), with technical and execution support from the Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MahaMetro) and the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA). Construction of the corridor involved joint ventures including Soma Enterprises and Dogus, as well as Continental Engineering Corp, ITD Cementation, and Tata Projects. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis had previously inaugurated Phase 2A in May 2025, connecting BKC to Acharya Atre Chowk.

The Aqua Line is designed to carry approximately 1.3 million passengers daily, with trains running at five-minute intervals during peak hours. Travel along the entire 33.5-kilometre corridor can be completed in under an hour, significantly reducing commuting time. Stations are equipped with elevators, escalators, and tactile flooring for accessibility, while fares range from ₹10 to ₹70 depending on the distance traveled.

Officials confirmed that trial runs and safety checks for Phase 2B were successfully completed prior to the inauguration, ensuring readiness for public service. The launch of this phase is expected to enhance commuter convenience, improve urban mobility, and reduce congestion on city roads, marking a significant milestone in Mumbai’s urban infrastructure development.
