Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate and dedicate five major development projects worth around Rs 3,350 crore in Ladakh on Thursday through video conferencing. He will also address the gathering. The projects aim to improve connectivity, strengthen energy infrastructure, preserve cultural heritage and enhance water security in the region.

The Prime Minister will inaugurate the New Passenger Terminal Building at Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport in Leh, constructed at a cost of Rs 640 crore. Spread across 23,800 square metres, the terminal is designed to handle 35 lakh passengers annually. It incorporates geothermal energy to improve efficiency and reduce its carbon footprint while combining modern facilities with elements of Ladakh’s cultural heritage.

Modi will also dedicate the 298-km Nimmu-Padum-Darcha Road, constructed by the Border Roads Organisation (BRO). Connecting Nimmu in Leh with Darcha in Himachal Pradesh through the remote Zanskar Valley, the road will provide an alternative route to Ladakh alongside the Srinagar-Leh and Manali-Leh highways. It will strengthen military logistics and improve access to healthcare, education, markets and essential services for local residents.

To strengthen energy security, the Prime Minister will inaugurate the 9 MW Hanu Small Hydroelectric Project and the 66 kV Double-Circuit Dah-Hanu-Khaltsi Transmission Line. The projects are expected to improve electricity network reliability and support the utilisation of Ladakh’s hydropower potential.

Another key initiative is India’s first Petroglyph Conservation Park at Sindhu Ghat in Leh. The park will protect ancient rock carvings depicting wildlife, human figures and symbolic representations, preserving valuable evidence of the region’s cultural and civilisational history. It will also promote public awareness and responsible heritage tourism.

The fifth initiative involves the inauguration of 40 water bodies across 40 villages under Project Him Sarovar, aligned with the objectives of Mission Amrit Sarovar. The initiative seeks to address seasonal water shortages by conserving water when available and ensuring supplies during critical agricultural periods.

The project is expected to support irrigation, protect farmers’ livelihoods and strengthen long-term water security in Ladakh, where agriculture often faces a mismatch between water availability and demand.

Together, the five projects are expected to contribute to Ladakh’s connectivity, sustainable development, energy reliability, heritage conservation and agricultural resilience.
