Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the 72nd National Volleyball Tournament at the Dr Sampoornanand Sports Stadium in Varanasi on Sunday, January 4 , officials confirmed. The week-long tournament will continue until January 11 , bringing together top volleyball talent from across India.

The competition will feature 58 teams with more than 1,000 players representing various states and institutions . The prime minister will join the inauguration through video conference , officially kicking off the event.

Organizers expect the tournament to display high levels of competition , sportsmanship , and emerging talent in Indian volleyball. Hosting the event in Varanasi underscores the government’s commitment to strengthening sports infrastructure and promoting athletic development in the city.

Officials also highlighted that events like these enhance Varanasi’s profile as a hub for major national sporting and cultural initiatives , reflecting the city’s growing role on the national stage.

This tournament is particularly significant because sports like volleyball often receive limited recognition in India. Having the Prime Minister inaugurate a senior national event of this scale will put a spotlight on the game, increase its visibility , and attract more viewership , giving a major boost to volleyball’s popularity in the country.
