
PM Modi To Begin Five-Nation Diplomatic Outreach Across UAE And Europe
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will embark on a six-day, five-nation official visit beginning Friday, covering the United Arab Emirates (UAE), the Netherlands, Sweden, Norway and Italy , in a major diplomatic outreach aimed at strengthening India’s strategic, economic and multilateral partnerships across West Asia and Europe amid ongoing global geopolitical uncertainties , according to the Ministry of External Affairs and statements from the Norwegian government.
The tour is expected to deepen India’s engagement with key partners in areas such as trade, investment, energy security, technology cooperation, climate action and global stability , while also expanding high-level political and business linkages.
In the first leg, PM Modi will visit the UAE , where he is scheduled to meet President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan . The two leaders will review progress in the comprehensive strategic partnership and discuss cooperation in energy, trade expansion, investment flows and regional developments in West Asia. The UAE remains a crucial economic partner for India and hosts a large Indian diaspora.
From May 15 to 17, the Prime Minister will travel to the Netherlands , where he will meet King Willem-Alexander, Queen Máxima and Prime Minister Rob Jetten. Talks will focus on expanding cooperation in defence and security, semiconductors, innovation, green hydrogen, water management and sustainable technologies . With bilateral trade reaching USD 27.8 billion in 2024–25 , the Netherlands remains one of India’s major European trade and investment partners.
In the next leg, PM Modi will visit Sweden (May 17–18) at the invitation of Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson. Discussions will centre on artificial intelligence, clean energy, climate action, defence, space technology, startups and resilient supply chains, along with engagement with European industry leaders. Bilateral trade between India and Sweden stood at around USD 7.75 billion in 2025 , reflecting growing economic cooperation.
The fourth stop will be Norway (May 18–19) , marking the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister in 43 years . PM Modi will attend the third India-Nordic Summit in Oslo and hold bilateral talks with Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre , besides meeting King Harald V. He will also participate in the India-Norway Business and Research Summit .
The summit will bring together India and Nordic countries Norway, Denmark, Finland, Iceland and Sweden focusing on green transition, renewable energy, digitalisation, innovation, blue economy, Arctic cooperation and sustainability . Norway has noted India’s growing global role in climate and stability issues and highlighted that India-Norway trade has more than doubled over the past decade, supported by the India-EFTA free trade agreement , which came into force last year.
In the final leg, PM Modi will visit Italy (May 19–20) at the invitation of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and will also meet President Sergio Mattarella. Discussions are expected to focus on defence cooperation, clean energy, innovation, science and technology, and trade expansion, along with review of the India-EU free trade agreement framework and strategic action plan 2025–2029. India-Italy bilateral trade stood at around USD 16.77 billion in 2025, reflecting steady growth.
Officials said the visit will significantly enhance India’s engagement with Europe and West Asia , strengthening cooperation in trade, investment, green transition, digital transformation and global governance, while reinforcing India’s role in addressing global economic and security challenges.
