Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday paid tribute to the revered Tamil poet-saint Thiruvalluvar on the occasion of Thiruvalluvar Day , recalling his timeless teachings that continue to guide society across generations.

In his message, Modi said Thiruvalluvar envisioned a society rooted in harmony and compassion, values that remain deeply relevant in the present times. He described the poet-saint as a symbol of wisdom and unity, who personifies the finest aspects of Tamil culture .

The Prime Minister noted that Thiruvalluvar’s philosophy, as reflected in the Tirukkural , focuses on ethical living and moral responsibility. The Tirukkural is an ancient Tamil text comprising 1,330 couplets that offer practical guidance on virtuous living, governance, social conduct and human relationships. Modi highlighted that Thiruvalluvar’s teachings stress truth, integrity, non-violence and compassion, giving the work a universal and timeless appeal.

Thiruvalluvar is believed to have lived around the early centuries of the Common Era and is regarded as one of the greatest moral philosophers of India . His Tirukkural is considered a cornerstone of Tamil literature and social thought, influencing generations of thinkers, rulers and reformers. Its emphasis on equality, ethical leadership and humane values has ensured its relevance across centuries and cultures.

Modi urged people to read the Tirukkural , saying it provides insight into the exceptional intellect and moral clarity of Thiruvalluvar and continues to inspire individuals and societies alike.

Thiruvalluvar Day is observed annually to honour the legendary Tamil philosopher-poet, whose ideas on virtue, justice and humanity remain influential across cultures and generations.
