PM Modi Pays Tribute to Iron Man Sardar Patel at Statue of Unity on 151st Birth Anniversary
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday paid floral tributes to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel at the Statue of Unity in Gujarat's Ekta Nagar, marking the 151st birth anniversary of India's first Deputy Prime Minister and the country's Iron Man.
Modi visited the iconic monument in the morning and offered flowers in honour of Patel, whose leadership played a defining role in shaping India's political unity after Independence.
October 31 is observed as Rashtriya Ekta Diwas (National Unity Day) in recognition of Patel's extraordinary contribution to national integration. Remembering the freedom fighter and statesman, Modi said Patel dedicated his life to building a strong, prosperous and capable India.
In his tribute, the Prime Minister described Patel as the pioneer of 'Akhand Bharat' and said his sacrifices and unwavering commitment to public service continued to inspire the country's efforts towards becoming developed and self-reliant.
Born on October 31, 1875, in Nadiad, Gujarat, Patel emerged as one of the most influential leaders of India's freedom movement. After Independence in 1947, he became the country's first Home Minister and played a crucial role in bringing more than 560 princely states into the Indian Union.
His efforts in persuading princely rulers to join the newly independent nation helped lay the foundation for India's political and territorial unity. His decisive leadership earned him the title of the 'Iron Man of India'.
Patel died on December 15, 1950, but his contribution to nation-building continues to hold a central place in India's history.
The government has observed October 31 as National Unity Day since 2014, with the occasion aimed at reinforcing the values of national unity, integrity and security.
