Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday inaugurated and laid the foundation stone for development projects worth over Rs 4,700 crore in Chandigarh , with a major focus on healthcare, education and road infrastructure . The projects are aimed at strengthening medical services, expanding healthcare capacity and improving regional infrastructure.

The Prime Minister arrived in Chandigarh after visiting Haryana's Jind , where he flagged off India's first hydrogen-powered train operating between Jind and Sonipat . The inauguration ceremony in Chandigarh was held at Punjab Engineering College and was attended by Union Health Minister J P Nadda , Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw , Punjab Governor and Chandigarh Administrator Gulab Chand Kataria , and Congress MP Manish Tewari , among other dignitaries.

A key highlight of the event was the inauguration of the Advanced Mother and Child Centre at the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education & Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh . The 300-bed facility , equipped with state-of-the-art medical infrastructure , is expected to significantly enhance maternal and child healthcare services while benefiting thousands of families across Chandigarh and neighbouring states.

The Prime Minister also inaugurated the Advanced Neurosciences Centre at PGIMER. The new centre will bring together neurology, neurosurgery, neuro-critical care and advanced diagnostic services under one roof, enabling comprehensive treatment for patients with complex neurological disorders. Officials said the facility would also strengthen medical research, education and specialised training in neurosciences.

In addition, Modi laid the foundation stone for a 150-bed Critical Care Block under the Pradhan Mantri Ayushman Bharat Health Infrastructure Mission (PM-ABHIM) at PGIMER. The upcoming facility is expected to improve emergency and critical care capacity while enhancing preparedness for future public health challenges.

The projects collectively represent a major investment in the region's healthcare ecosystem, while also supporting educational and infrastructure development in Chandigarh.
