PM Modi launches India’s high-tech ship hub in vizag

Prime Minister Narendra Modi virtually inaugurated the Indian Ship Technology Centre (ISTC) at the Indian Maritime University (IMU) campus in Visakhapatnam. The launch is part of key initiatives under the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways to boost India’s shipbuilding capacity and strengthen its maritime sector.

The newly established ISTC has been designed to provide cutting-edge research and development facilities in ship design and production technologies. It will also play a crucial role in training skilled manpower for the maritime industry. The centre is equipped with advanced technologies and specialized software to support indigenous ship design, a step towards reducing India’s dependence on foreign inputs.

IMU Campus Director Prof. V. K. Kesavadev stated that the facility will serve as a vital support system for shipbuilding units in India, offering design expertise, technological solutions, and training opportunities. He emphasized that the centre’s research-driven approach will enhance India’s competitiveness in the global shipbuilding market.

ISTC Director Prof. K. M. Sivakholundu highlighted that the centre aims to make India one of the top ten shipbuilding nations by 2030. He explained that ISTC will act as a single-window service provider, extending consultancy, policy advice, and specialized training to both industry and government stakeholders.

The inauguration witnessed participation from maritime experts, professionals, faculty members, and students across all six IMU campuses, underscoring the collaborative role ISTC is expected to play in education and industry partnerships.
