PM Modi Launches India’s First ATMP Semiconductor Plant
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday inaugurated Micron Technology’s semiconductor ATMP (Assembly, Testing, Marking and Packaging) plant at Sanand in Gujarat, asserting that India, long recognised for its software strength, is now firmly establishing its identity in the hardware sector as well.
Describing the facility as the first ATMP plant of its kind in the country , Modi said its inauguration reflects the deepening partnership between India and the United States , particularly in emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence and semiconductors. “India is capable, India is competitive and India is committed,” he said, adding that the message to global investors is clear: “India is ready, India is reliable, and India delivers.”
The Prime Minister noted that while the 20th century was defined by the industrial revolution driven by factories and mass production, the 21st century belongs to the AI revolution , with semiconductors serving as the bridge between the two eras. “If oil regulated the last century, the microchip will regulate this century,” he said, underlining the strategic importance of chips in the modern global economy.
Recalling that India launched its Semiconductor Mission during the COVID-19 pandemic , when global supply chains were severely disrupted, Modi said the seeds planted with conviction during that challenging period are now bearing fruit. He emphasised that India is rapidly becoming an integral part of the global semiconductor value chain , as countries seek secure and resilient supply chains for critical technologies. The two largest democracies India and the US are working together to make supply chains, including those for critical minerals, more reliable, he added.
Under the Semicon India programme , the government has approved 10 projects so far, and apart from the Micron plant, three more projects are expected to commence production shortly. Modi stressed that the semiconductor ecosystem being developed is pan-India in nature , with projects underway in Noida (Uttar Pradesh), Assam, Odisha and Punjab. He said India is focusing not merely on individual factories but on building the entire semiconductor value chain.
Announcing India Semiconductor Mission 2.0 in the recent Budget, he said the objective is to boost domestic production and create opportunities in materials, components and services as demand rises.
Highlighting India’s growing manufacturing ambitions, Modi said the country’s large population of first-time gadget users is driving demand across electronics and automobiles. As electronic component manufacturing expands and exports grow exponentially, domestic demand for semiconductors will also increase.
Referring to Sanand’s transformation after the setting up of the Tata Nano plant years ago, he said the new facility is poised to create a similar ecosystem. According to a government release, the Rs 22,516 crore plant will manufacture SSD storage devices, DRAM and NAND products , marking a new chapter in Sanand’s industrial growth.
