PM Modi inaugurates 72nd National volleyball tournament, says India preparing for 2036 Olympics

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the 72nd National Volleyball Tournament in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh , via video conferencing on Sunday, highlighting India’s ambitions on the global sports stage. He stated that India is preparing with full strength to host the 2036 Olympic Games , following the 2030 Commonwealth Games in the country.

Shri Modi noted that India has hosted over 20 major international events in the past decade, including the U-17 FIFA World Cup, the Hockey World Cup, and top chess tournaments. “The nation is riding on the Reform Express, with sports forming an integral part of this journey,” he said.

The tournament, from January 4 to 11, features over 1,000 players representing 58 teams from across the country. Drawing parallels between volleyball and national progress, he said, “No victory is ever achieved alone; our success depends on coordination, trust, and the readiness of the team. Every individual has a role, and our nation advances only when each fulfills their responsibility with seriousness.”

Varanasi, known for its rich sporting heritage, has produced athletes through institutions like Banaras Hindu University, UP College, and Kashi Vidyapeeth. Modern facilities like the Sigra Stadium provide players with state-of-the-art amenities. The Prime Minister encouraged participants to experience the city’s culture, including visits to Baba Vishwanath temple and boating in the Ganga.

He also highlighted government initiatives such as the National Sports Governance Act, Khelo Bharat Policy 2025, and TOPs (Target Olympic Podium Scheme), which focus on talent development, global exposure, and transparent selection. Events like the Sansad Khel Mahotsav have allowed millions of youth, including around three lakh from Varanasi, to showcase their skills.

Shri Modi concluded by wishing all players success, expressing hope that “every spike, block, and point from the soil of Varanasi will elevate India’s sporting aspirations.” Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, Shri Yogi Adityanath , was present among other dignitaries.
