PM Modi hails commissioning of Indian Coast Guard Ship Samudra Pratap

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday hailed the commissioning of the Indian Coast Guard Ship (ICGS) Samudra Pratap, calling it a significant milestone in India’s maritime journey.

In a post on X responding to Defence Minister Rajnath Singh , the Prime Minister said the induction of the advanced vessel strengthens India’s vision of a self-reliant (Atmanirbhar) defence sector, enhances the nation’s security apparatus, and underscores a commitment to sustainable, eco-friendly operations.

“The commissioning of ICGS Samudra Pratap is noteworthy for numerous reasons, including that it adds strength to our vision of self-reliance, boosts our security apparatus, and reflects a commitment to sustainability, among others,” PM Modi wrote.

The ship is designed for multi-role operations , including maritime surveillance, coastal law enforcement, search-and-rescue missions, and environmental protection. It will patrol India’s coastal waters and Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) , monitor marine pollution, and assist in disaster response, thereby enhancing coastal vigilance and safeguarding India’s vast maritime interests .

Experts note that the induction of ICGS Samudra Pratap marks a step forward in India’s strategic reach in the Indian Ocean Region , boosting the country’s ability to secure trade routes, respond to emergencies, and coordinate joint operations with the Navy. Being domestically built, it also strengthens India’s indigenous defence production and sets a model for future modern, multi-role, eco-conscious vessels.

The commissioning reflects India’s growing emphasis on maritime security, self-reliance, sustainability, and fleet modernisation , signalling a stronger and more capable Coast Guard ready to meet evolving challenges in the coming years.
