PM Modi Greets Gujarat, Maharashtra on Statehood Day, Celebrations Mark Formation Legacy
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday extended greetings to the people of Gujarat and Maharashtra on their statehood day, lauding their enduring contributions to India’s growth and development.
In separate messages, Modi highlighted Gujarat’s rich history, vibrant culture and enterprising spirit, expressing confidence that the state will continue to scale new heights. Greeting Maharashtra, he praised its legacy of social reform, cultural depth and leadership across sectors such as industry, education, science and the arts, while wishing continued progress and well-being for its people.
May 1 is observed as Gujarat Day and Maharashtra Day to commemorate the formation of the two states in 1960 after the bifurcation of the erstwhile Bombay State along linguistic lines. The reorganisation followed sustained movements the Mahagujarat Movement and the Samyukta Maharashtra Movement which demanded separate states for Gujarati- and Marathi-speaking populations. Maharashtra was formed with Mumbai as its capital, while Gujarat was carved out as a separate state with Ahmedabad initially serving as the capital.
The occasion was marked by official ceremonies and cultural events in both states. In Gujarat, celebrations typically include flag-hoisting ceremonies, cultural programmes showcasing traditional music and dance, and events highlighting the state’s developmental achievements. In Maharashtra, the day is observed with parades, official functions and tributes to leaders of the statehood movement, especially in Mumbai, where ceremonial gatherings and cultural performances reflect the state’s heritage.
Leaders across the political spectrum also extended greetings on the occasion. Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel and Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadanvis conveyed their wishes to citizens, reaffirming their commitment to the states’ continued development. Governors and other senior leaders also issued messages celebrating the achievements and aspirations of the people.
Government buildings were illuminated, educational institutions held special programmes, and citizens across both states participated in events celebrating their linguistic, cultural and historical identity.
