Former Prime Minister H D Deve Gowda on Monday marked his 94th birthday with a strong message of continued public service, declaring that age and physical limitations would not stop him from fighting for people’s causes . The veteran leader also expressed confidence about the future of the JD(S)-BJP alliance ahead of the 2028 Karnataka Assembly elections .

Speaking to reporters in Bengaluru, the Janata Dal (Secular) patriarch said he remains determined to stay active in politics despite advancing age and health challenges.

“I have a firm resolve to fight for the people's cause for as many more days as possible. I will not sit at home saying that I have completed 93 years. I will move around in the wheelchair,” Gowda said, underlining his commitment to public life .

Reflecting on his nearly 68-year political journey , the former prime minister said his focus has always remained on ordinary people and their concerns.

“I have been fighting throughout my political life. I’m not worried about how much people recognize it, but fighting for the cause of the people is something before me, and I will continue to do my job,” he added.

The occasion also saw greetings pouring in from across the political spectrum. Prime Minister Narendra Modi , currently on an overseas visit, wished Gowda and praised his contribution to public life. In a message posted on X, Modi described the veteran leader as someone known for his deep understanding of policy issues and his commitment to serving the marginalized sections of society.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah , senior BJP leader B S Yediyurappa , and several other political leaders also conveyed their wishes to the former prime minister.

Gowda, who served as India’s 11th Prime Minister between 1996 and 1997, also spoke about the political future of the JD(S) within the NDA alliance . Calling his party a “minor partner” in the alliance, he said he was confident that differences, if any, would be resolved smoothly because of his cordial relationship with Modi and Shah.

The veteran leader urged party workers and leaders to strengthen the JD(S) with honesty and discipline, asking them to work like committed soldiers in preparation for future political battles.

Even at 94, Gowda’s message was clear, retirement is not on his mind, and the political veteran still sees himself in the middle of public life and people’s struggles .
