PM Modi embarks on strategic three‑nation visit to Jordan, Ethiopia, and Oman

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday departed on a significant three‑nation diplomatic tour to the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, and the Sultanate of Oman , underscoring India’s commitment to strengthening ties with the Global South, West Asia, and Africa.

The visit to Jordan , at the invitation of King Abdullah II ibn Al Hussein , marks 75 years of diplomatic relations . This is the first full-fledged state visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Amman in nearly four decades. During his stay, the Prime Minister is scheduled to hold detailed discussions with King Abdullah II, Prime Minister Jafar Hassan, and Crown Prince Al Hussein bin Abdullah II. He will also meet the Indian community in Jordan , recognising their contributions to bilateral relations. The discussions are expected to focus on regional security, defence cooperation, trade, investment, and technology partnerships .

From Jordan, Prime Minister Modi will travel to Addis Ababa , marking his first official visit to Ethiopia . In the Ethiopian capital, which is also the headquarters of the African Union, he will meet Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali and address a Joint Session of Parliament, highlighting India’s journey as the “Mother of Democracy” and the value of India–Ethiopia collaboration in the Global South. Talks are expected to cover trade, investment, infrastructure development, renewable energy, and multilateral cooperation. Ethiopia’s role as the African Union headquarters provides a strategic platform to further India–Africa partnerships.

The final leg of the tour takes the Prime Minister to Oman, commemorating 70 years of diplomatic ties. In Muscat, he will meet His Majesty the Sultan of Oman to strengthen the Strategic Partnership and discuss trade, investment, energy cooperation, defence, and technology collaboration. The Prime Minister will also address the Indian diaspora in Oman, whose contributions have bolstered the country’s development and India–Oman relations. The visit comes on the heels of a Free Trade Agreement between India and Oman, expected to further boost bilateral commerce.

Bilateral Trade Context:

• Jordan

• : India-Jordan trade stands at around $2.8 billion , with key Indian exports including pharmaceuticals, engineering goods, and imports of fertilisers.

• Ethiopia

• : Bilateral trade is estimated at $550 million , with Indian exports focused on pharmaceuticals, machinery, and manufactured goods.

• Oman

• : Two-way trade exceeds $10.6 billion , with India importing petroleum and related products and exporting goods worth about $4 billion.

The three-nation tour reflects India’s strategic, economic, and cultural engagement with key partners in Asia and Africa, reinforcing its role as a reliable ally in the Global South and a strong voice in international forums.
