PM Modi Completes 25 Years At The Helm, Sets Six Big Goals For India’s Future
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday completed 25 years as head of government, marking a political journey that began with his swearing-in as Gujarat chief minister on October 7, 2001, and continued with three successive terms as Prime Minister from 2014. The milestone was marked by nationwide BJP programmes, a major address in Delhi, tributes from senior leaders and congratulatory messages from foreign leaders.
Modi began the day by offering prayers at the Shri Vinayak Mandir in Sarojini Nagar, New Delhi, before addressing the Viksit Bharat Sankalp Sabha-Seva Jyoti Yatra at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium. Reflecting on his journey, Modi said the experience of 25 years was not merely his personal achievement but an asset for the country, and thanked citizens, BJP workers, NDA allies and those who had supported him through the years.
Rather than treating the milestone as a moment to look back, Modi used the occasion to set out a larger national agenda. Repeatedly invoking the phrase “We will do it”, he listed six ambitions: achieving Viksit Bharat by 2047, becoming one of the world's top three economies, building an Atmanirbhar Bharat, emerging as a global manufacturing hub, hosting the Olympics and taking India's footsteps further into space. He said the country should treat the next phase as a period of renewed effort rather than rest.
The BJP marked the occasion across the country through Seva Jyoti yatras, rallies, exhibitions, torch marches and public outreach programmes. In Gujarat, where Modi's journey as head of government began, yatras were organised across districts. The month-long Seva Sankalp campaign also culminated with simultaneous journeys connecting Vadnagar, his birthplace, and Varanasi, his parliamentary constituency.
In Gurugram, Union Home Minister Amit Shah described October 7 as a significant day in India's democratic history and said Modi's 25 years as chief minister and prime minister would be written in “golden letters”. Other BJP leaders and chief ministers also marked the occasion at programmes across the country.
The milestone also drew international attention. Leaders from countries including Japan, Bhutan, Nigeria, Belgium, Dominica and others congratulated Modi, with messages highlighting his long tenure, India's development and its expanding international engagement.
The Union Cabinet had on Tuesday passed a resolution congratulating Modi on 25 years of continuous leadership, citing his governance record and initiatives spanning welfare, infrastructure, technology, manufacturing, national security, diplomacy and India's ambition to become a developed country by 2047.
The celebrations also had a direct impact on Delhi commuters, with traffic restrictions imposed on several major roads around the Indira Gandhi Stadium as BJP workers and supporters gathered for the programme.
