PM Modi attends BJP leadership transition as Nitin Nabin takes charge as national president

Nitin Nabin formally assumed charge as the national president of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday at a ceremony attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi , Union Home Minister Amit Shah, outgoing BJP national president JP Nadda, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, senior party leaders and chief ministers from BJP-ruled states.

The event at the BJP headquarters in the national capital underscored the significance of the leadership transition. A senior leader from Bihar, Nabin is a five-time MLA from the Bankipur constituency and a former state minister , widely regarded within the party for his organisational and administrative experience.

The election process for the BJP’s national president began after 30 out of 36 state presidents were elected , crossing the mandatory 50 per cent threshold. According to party sources, 37 sets of nomination papers were submitted in favour of Nabin , reflecting unanimous backing from the party’s top leadership.

Addressing party workers, PM Modi congratulated Nabin , saying that within the party, Nitin Nabin is the “boss”, while he himself is a mere party worker. He added that Nabin’s role extends to coordination among National Democratic Alliance (NDA) allies .

West Bengal BJP president Samik Bhattacharya described Nabin as a “mature politician” with long organisational experience.

Born on May 23, 1980, in Ranchi, Jharkhand, Nitin Nabin comes from a modest, middle-class family background and entered public life at a young age without the backing of a political dynasty, shaping his grassroots-oriented approach.

Nabin was first elected to the Bihar Legislative Assembly in 2006 and has represented Bankipur consecutively since 2010. He has held key portfolios in the Bihar government and played important organisational roles at the state and national levels.

Party leaders said Nabin’s appointment is significant as he is among the younger leaders to head the BJP nationally , signalling a generational shift with a focus on strong organisation and enhanced coordination within the NDA ahead of crucial political contests.

Meanwhile, celebrations erupted across Bihar following Nabin’s elevation, with BJP workers bursting crackers and distributing sweets in Bankipur and Patna.
