PM Modi, Assam leaders pay tribute to Lachit Borphukan on Lachit Diwas

On the occasion of Lachit Diwas, marking the 403rd birth anniversary of revered Ahom general Lachit Borphukan, Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to the legendary warrior, describing him as a symbol of courage, patriotism, and true leadership. In a post on X, the Prime Minister said that Lachit Borphukan’s heroism continues to inspire generations and highlighted his pivotal role in safeguarding the culture and heritage of Assam.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma also paid homage, describing Lachit Borphukan as the immortal pride of Assam. He emphasized that the state is honoring his legacy through memorials, institutions, and educational initiatives to ensure that future generations learn about his contributions to the nation. Union Home Minister Amit Shah and other national and regional leaders also remembered the great warrior, urging the youth to draw inspiration from his bravery, leadership, and commitment to his motherland.

Various commemorative events were held across Assam, including floral tributes, cultural programs, exhibitions, and historic reenactments celebrating Lachit Borphukan’s military leadership and sacrifice. Educational institutions organized lectures and activities to highlight his legacy, while people across the Northeast paid tribute on social media.

Lachit Borphukan, a commander of the Ahom army in the 17th century, is best known for leading the Ahom forces to victory in the Battle of Saraighat in 1671, where he successfully defended Assam against the Mughal Empire. Despite his ill health, he demonstrated exceptional determination, personally leading his troops and instilling a spirit of courage and unity. His leadership preserved Assam’s sovereignty and safeguarded its cultural identity.

On his 403rd birth anniversary, leaders across the country highlighted the enduring relevance of Lachit Borphukan’s values of resilience, duty, and nationalism. His legacy continues to be celebrated not only in Assam but across India as a symbol of gallantry, cultural pride, and patriotic devotion.
